Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention

Action for a Better Community — has been awarded up to $380,000 to fund a Lead Resource Center to help families and property owners assess the lead risk in their homes and apply for funding to reduce lead hazards. More than 1,000 individuals have received education about the dangers and prevention of lead poisoning each year since the beginning of the project.


City of Rochester, Neighborhood and Business Development — was awarded $1.5 million to fund the Lead Safe Homes Program, which provides grants to property owners in the 14621 zip code for repairs needed to reduce lead paint threats in their homes. To date, more than 90 houses slated to be made lead safe have been completed.


Neighbor Works Rochester — received $26,000 in 2010 for equipment that can detect lead within the layers of any painted surfaces. Over 365 homes will benefit from having lead risk hazards identified and clearance test reports issued using this equipment over the next three years.
